. How can I prepare for rhinoplasty?
Prior to the rhinoplasty your surgeon will go over the realistic expectations of your procedure. He or she will determine what needs to be done and the most appropriate methods to use in order to meet your expectations. As far as what you can do to prepare for your rhinoplasty, it is recommended that you don’t take any medications that may inhibit blood clotting or cause postoperative bleeding problems. If you smoke, it is also recommended that you stop smoking at least a month before your surgery and don’t start again until a month afterward. Smoking greatly slows down the healing process and will extend the time it takes you to recover.
Is rhinoplasty right for me?
It’s a long-term decision and a surgery, so rhinoplasty has to be right for you. If you have any reservations, or only want minor changes, then exploring non-surgical rhinoplasty, which uses dermal fillers to smooth smaller bumps, might be right for you.
Rhinoplasty recovery takes time and patience. Immediately following your surgery, expect visible swelling and bruising, which may include black eyes. Many people say that they feel congested and have to breathe through their mouths. While pain may be a factor, also don’t expect to sleep well or look particularly presentable.
About a week post-op, depending on your healing progress, your cast and/or nasal packing is removed. At this point, you can expect to breathe and sleep better, and blow your nose.
After 10 to 14 days, swelling and bruising should subside enough for you to return to work and/or school, and other non-strenuous activities. Most doctors recommend waiting at least a month before returning to vigorous activity and exercise. Avoid wearing glasses or sunglasses as the nasal bridge heals.
What surgical technique do you recommend for me?
There are several different types of nose surgery and surgical techniques. The exact approach is taken depend on your nose, the extent of surgery needed and your goals for the procedure.
What are the risks and potential complications?
Almost all patients will have some degree of bruising and swelling. Surgeons use splints to control the swelling and recommend cold compresses, keeping your head elevated for the first few days following the procedure and not engaging in strenuous activities until we give you the go-ahead. More serious risks include:
How long does it take for bruising and swelling to go away?
Most bruising and swelling resolve in about two weeks.
How long do the results last?
Results should be permanent. Some changes occur to everyone’s nose over a long period. No one’s nose looks the same at age 20 and 70 regardless of whether or not surgery had been done.
Can rhinoplasty improve my breathing through my nose?
Rhinoplasty will help the functionality of the nose by creating a less obstructed nasal package with clearer channels to breathe through. Sometimes, however, breathing can be affected by sinus problems, so it is worth highlighting the source of the problem before electing to have rhinoplasty for this purpose alone.
I have a ethnic background, is there any rhinoplasty procedure that caters to ethnic noses?
There are procedures that address ethnic noses. The procedure would depend on the ethnicity. Some ethnic groups have a long nose and prominent hump; some have a wide and flat nose. The procedure is always tailored to the individual patient after a complete discussion of their goals.
Are most patients pleased with the results of a rhinoplasty?
Patients with realistic goals for rhinoplasty are generally very happy with the new shape of their nose. The exact results depend on your nasal bone and cartilage structure, your facial shape, the thickness of your skin and your age. While you will look and feel fine within a week or two, you may have minimal swelling for as long as a year after the rhinoplasty procedure. Although your appearance may not be absolutely optimal until a year has passed, you will more than likely be extremely pleased with the results of your nose surgery soon after the procedure.
