What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is the study of the eye’s anatomy, genetics, illness, and other disorders. The term ophthalmology originated from the Greek words ophthalmos which means “eye” and logos which means “word.” This literally means the “science of eyes.” People refer to a certified doctor for this science as an ophthalmologist.

Loss of vision can be caused be a number of things. Acute or sudden vision loss can be caused by a retinal detachment, a stroke in the vessels in the eye or in patients with diabetes from bleeding in the eye, whereas slow vision loss is most commonly caused by cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration. Patients with slow vision loss often don’t notice it until it becomes severe. This is one reason why routine eye exams are useful as they can help to detect these changes earlier. At Pietra Health, we partner with the most experienced eye surgeons around the world. These specialists perform eye surgery for up to 80% less than the average cost in the Europe, UK and US.

Modern methods of ophthalmology are based on laser and micro surgical technologies, which enable not only to perform vision correction, but also to cure the most complicated eye diseases in any age. Progressive ophthalmological methods of diagnostics and treatment facilitate early detection of eye diseases, effective prevention procedures and timely successful treatment.

Some common procedures include:

Cataract surgery
Retina and vitreous surgeries
Refractive surgery
Pediatric eye surgery
Corneal surgery
